Ok guys, help me out on this one: A Question About Fanfiction
I’ve got an opportunity to submit a bit of writing to this independent publishing thing. Nothing serious but not vanity publishing and I got thinking of what short stories of mine that I’m fond of, as I haven’t written very many.
There’s one called A Boy and his Skull that is, effectively, a Sherlock fanfic set way back in Sherlock’s childhood that I’m very proud of and has had reasonable popularity. (For me I see it as popular, by ‘net standards it really isn’t though).
It’s become for me a story that’s far more than just a fanfic as it seems to say something and has a part of myself in it, and only touches lightly on the Sherlock fandom (ie a genius boy, and how he got that skull on his mantelpiece). I really want to submit it as a representation of my writing, but that would involve doing a fifty shades of grey and swapping it into an original piece.
As the writer it is my right to do this. But to do so I’d have to take the old fanfic down. When I write fanfics I do it out of sheer casual joy and out of a feeling of giving to the fandom’s community…so it puts me in a sort of ethical pickle.
It is, to me, my best fanfic - probably one of my best stories full stop- and I want to share it with the public world by letting it stand on it’s own two feet as a piece of writing. It is not as if I don’t have other non-porn fanfics that I’m proud of (the Doctor Who fic survivors is a good one for example, and at least twice as long.) But it is the most popular so far. Though, indeed my Sherlock-porn fanfic Chatroulette is also fairly popular, but it doesn’t feature in my heart as much.
It’s a short story by an amateur in the end, and it’s hardly going to make so much as a blip on the world through this tiny publishing project. But I want to try. If it isn’t accepted I’ll put it straight back on fanfiction.net and archiveofourown.
I just wondered what your guys’ thoughts were on turning fanfics into original stories.
Thanks

BBC’s Sherlock theme played on a music box
Hauntingly beautiful.
this is creeping me out, but in a good way.
>Sherlock: Play a haunting melody on your music box.
Really eerie, but so beautiful.
I want to put this in a horror movie.
Ooo shivers

It’s all it takes - One lonely, naive man, desperate to show off, and a woman clever enough to make him feel special.

I will always reblog this. Because this is the moment I doubted anything. I doubted Sherlock, I doubted Moriarty, I doubted John, and Mycroft, and Molly and everything. I doubted my own existence. I screamed a bit. Literally.
I just remember being very ‘OH NO YOU DIDN’T STOP THAT STOP THAT NOW’ and I also yelled at my tv.
I had my head in my hands.
I did actually shout at my television. And I thought, for a split second “Is he telling the truth?” And then it was NO NO NO SHERLOCK WOULDN’T DO THAT. BELIEVE IN HIM.
I knew Moriarty was acting, but in that moment there was a part of me that actually really wanted to believe Richard Brook, doubted Sherlock, refuted Moriarty’s existence and DAMN. THIS SCENE.
Andrew Scott for all the awards.
I knew it was entirely against all logic, but for a moment I believed in Richard Brook, and it was terrifying and delightful all at the same time.
