The beard of Henry VIII
In 1535, King Henry VIII of England, who wore a beard himself, introduced a tax on beards. The tax was a graduated tax, varying with the wearer’s social position. His daughter, Elizabeth I of England, reintroduced the beard tax, taxing every beard of more than two weeks’ growth.
The tudors just loved fashion policing. Of course in those days fashion denoted status importantly, as well as gender and - following the controvesies of the reformation - the way the clergy dressed was a huge topic.
eg the the 1560s vestiarian controversy
For a look into how contemporaries freaked out over the ‘tranvesticism’ of masculine dress, there’s a great set of pamphlets from 1620 called Haec-muiler and Haec-vir
In short, clothes were a big business in those days

Well, shit. that’s me right there. Time to get on it, I guess… (via typette)
I need to print this out in big fucking letters and post it somewhere. Because it’s me and it’s depressing.
And it’s hard. Really hard. Because I try bits of everything. But I think that my passion is writing in some form, because that’s what I always do. In a way. Even if the ideas don’t come. It’s what I always come back to even if it’s just silly bits of fanfiction. Or a roleplay that I’m attatched by the hip to.So maybe it’s time to start treating it seriously again. It’s just been so bloody long…..
But I’ve always dreamt of being an author. Not of being a good embroiderer or a knitter or painter. They all assist in relaxing me and facilitating the stuff from the writing.
So let’s do it.
